BioWare hailed as a top Canadian employer

October 17, 2007

After Electronic Arts announced last week that it had acquired BioWare-Pandemic from Elevation Partners in a deal worth $860 million, BioWare cofounder Dr. Ray Muzyka told If Its Games that the sale meant more opportunities for the studio, but added that “nothing would change” about the way they make games.

That “don’t mess with success” attitude was bolstered today as BioWare revealed that it has been named to Canadian magazine The Financial Post’s 10 Best Companies to Work For. The Edmonton-based studio has appeared in the Post’s annual Top 100 Employers list three times before this year, but this is its first time cracking the top 10. The list is culled from thousands of submissions for Canadian companies in a variety of industries, and seeks to recognize those with the best employment practices, including better pay, welcome perks, and more comprehensive benefits.

This is not the first time a game developer has cracked the Post Top 10 list. Last year, Vivendi Universal Games (now simply Vivendi Games) made the list for its Radical Entertainment studio.

Sony enters the Rat Race

October 17, 2007

By way of its PlayStation Blog, Sony has announced Rat Race, a new episodic game series coming to the PlayStation 3 this winter. The game is in development by Super-Ego Games, a relatively upstart studio whose former credits include The Barbie Diaries: High School Mystery for the PC.

You’re a VERY BAD monkey!

Belying its snicker-worthy predecessor, Rat Race will focus on adult themes in an office setting. Players will “sneak, sprint, solve puzzles, eavesdrop, and steal” as they attempt to survive the day working for the dysfunctional and questionably legal BiggCo. The game promises a number of unique characters, including an “impossibly hot” PR exec, a back-stabbing coworker, and a research scientist who “may or may not be intimate with his lab monkey.”

According to Super-Ego, the game is “written and voiced by some really funny people with credits on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, My Name Is Earl, Saturday Night Live, South Park, Flight of the Conchords, Sex and the City, Ugly Betty, and Comedy Central.” Also working on the project are stand-up comedians local to the studio’s New York City office.

Rat Race has not yet been rated or priced.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary 360 dated

October 17, 2007

When Eidos first announced that it would be releasing Tomb Raider: Anniversary for the Xbox 360 in episodic fashion, the plan was to put the game on Xbox Live as of last month, and then to follow up with a retail release by the end of the year. Eidos today confirmed North American and European release dates for the retail game, and it appears that plans have changed.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary will arrive on shelves in North America on October 23, with a release across the pond on October 26. The downloadable versions of the game will arrive for both regions in November. However, customers who choose to download the game rather than purchase the retail version will need to have a copy of Tomb Raider: Legend.

Eidos has previously said that the game’s four episodes will be split into two downloads (each including the introductory Croft Manor level), and will sell for a total of 2400 Microsoft points ($30). Tomb Raider: Anniversary is already available on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and PC. A Wii version is also set for release later this year.

Hellgate golden

October 17, 2007

It’s common knowledge that when the gates of Hell do, in fact, open, they’ll part on the aptly prophetic day of October 31. As a precursor to Armageddon, Electronic Arts and Namco Bandai Games announced today that Flagship Studios’ Hellgate: London has gone gold and will commence its North American retail invasion on October 31 for PCs. A European release will subsequently follow on November 2.

Hellgate: London is the first project from San Francisco-based Flagship Studios, which formed in 2003. The studio boasts an impressive pedigree of developers, including Bill Roper, David Brevik, and Max and Erich Schaefer, who earned their reputation at Blizzard North on projects such as the original Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft.

Often likened to a postapocalyptic Diablo, Hellgate: London melds fast-paced shooter action with role-playing game item collection and character development. After the game’s initial $49.99 purchase (a $59.99 collector’s edition will also be available), the game can be played through single-player or upgraded to an Elite subscription account at $9.95 a month, which confers to the title massively multiplayer functionality. If Its Games’s previous coverage has more on the M-for-Mature game.

A single-player demo for the game will be available tomorrow. In it, gamers can sample Hellgate’s storyline as well as take on a few sidequests on the mean streets of London’s Holborn Station as either the blademaster or the marksman.
