Midway locks in PS3 Stranglehold

October 24, 2007

Midway announced today that Stranglehold is certifiably gold on the PlayStation 3. The game, which is the continuation of John Woo’s 1992 Hong Kong action epic Hard Boiled, will now be impacting retail shelves on October 29.

The PS3 version of Stranglehold was originally slated to follow the Xbox 360 and PC versions in September. However, earlier this month, Midway president and CEO David Zucker said that the teams developing both BlackSite: Area 51 and Stranglehold were having problems getting Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3 to work as intended on Sony’s hardware. Epic itself seems to be in a similar boat, as Midway also revealed at that time that Unreal Tournament III wouldn’t be hitting its much-publicized 2007 release date on the PS3, though the PC version was still go for a November launch.

Stranglehold is being developed by the team behind 2004’s Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy. Woo’s gunplay-heavy film being the inspiration for the game, Stranglehold features highly destructible environments and a penchant for stylized, cinematic shooting sequences. If Its Games’s review has more on what gamers can expect from the high-octane shooter.

Stranglehold is rated M for Mature and will retail for $59.99 on the PS3. The PS3 version will also receive a $69.95 collector’s edition will include a high-definition version of Hard Boiled on the same Blu-ray disc as the game. A demo for the game is currently available on the PlayStation Network.

Hopkins heads Beowulf cast

October 24, 2007

Paramount Pictures scored an all-star cast of highly acclaimed actors for its upcoming big-screen adaptation of the quintessential Anglo-Saxon heroic epic Beowulf, which is due out in theaters next month. Today, Ubisoft announced that a few of those actors would be reprising their roles in the upcoming action adventure tie-in, due out for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Xbox 360, and PC in November.

Hopkins and Winstone in Beowulf.

Having already established himself as one of Britain’s most prolific stage and screen actors, Sir Anthony Hopkins will make his in-game voice-acting debut articulating the role of King Hrothgar. A highly decorated actor, Hopkins won an Academy Award for his role as the maniacal cannibal Hannibal Lector in Silence of the Lambs and was nominated for the prestigious honor for his supporting role in Amistad, as well as leading roles in Nixon and Remains of the Day.

Hopkins will be joined by a trio of in-game voice-acting rookies. Ray Winstone, who plays the titular role of Beowulf, mostly recently appeared in Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning The Departed. Best known for his role as the off-kilter dark arts professor Alastor Moody in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Brendan Gleeson will lend his voice to the role of Wiglaf. Rounding out the cast is Sebastian Roche as Wulfgar; Roche is otherwise known for his work on the daytime soap General Hospital.

Wright: Spore still coming next spring

October 24, 2007

At the Leipzig Games Convention in August, the public got its hands on a playable version of Spore, the species-evolving/civilization-growing/space-faring game from game designer Will Wright. The appearance of the game came two and a half years after the game was first unveiled, and two and a half months after it was delayed yet again.

Spore’s postponement marked the second time the game, originally due out in 2006, had been pushed back. According to Wright, though, the PC edition will still land in the rough Q2 2008 target window set by Electronic Arts executives during a post-earning-report conference call. (A scaled-down edition for the Nintendo DS has also been announced, though it currently does not have a release date.)

Saying Spore will be “roughly available in six months’ time” on BBC Radio Five Live yesterday, Wright went on to explain the reasons behind the holdup. He said the game was undergoing “extensive testing” to ensure that it had the same broad appeal as one of his previous creations. “I’d like the people who played The Sims to be able to play Spore,” he said. “I don’t want it to be just [for] hardcore gamers.”

Legal loophole allows Manhunt 2 to be sold in UK as a download

A Layer from CMS has spotted a loophole in the UK\’s 1984 Video Recordings Act that would allow Manhunt 2 to be legally sold in the UK as a download despite the BBFC rejecting the title from classification. Downloaded games do not require an age rating, although it is very unlikely Rockstar will take such action for distribution of the gory title.
