Peter Dille recently explained how Playstation Network will triumph over Xbox Live. He noted that you can do things on PSN that you can\’t do on Live and used Little Big Planet as an example - \”we’re putting the development tools into the hands of the consumers and then using the network to upload those back up to the network. That’s sort of the two way communication you can have on the network from the game design perspective that you can’t find anywhere else.\”

While most casual games involve tried-and-true gameplay mechanics like falling bricks or matching three-of-a-kind, PopCap’s Peggle has become a standout success for the publisher based on its Price is Right Plinko-style gameplay. To date, the game has found a following among iPod users and PC gamers, but PopCap today said it’s going after a more hardcore crowd with a new DS port of the game.

Q’s Peggle looks a lot like normal Peggle.
To ensure the game appeals to a more dedicated gaming audience, PopCap has entrusted development duties to Q Entertainment, the studio behind Lumines, Meteos, and Rez HD. In a prepared statement, Q CEO Shuji Utsumi said, “We’ve always incorporated casual game elements into our console and handheld games, and now we have an opportunity to bring our gaming sensibilities and expertise to the DS version of Peggle, and make a very novel ‘cross-over’ game for all ages.”
Q’s version of Peggle is expected to have more levels than any other version of the game (including some exclusive to the DS) and revamped control scheme options. Peggle will arrive on the DS this winter with a suggested retail price of $29.95.
PopCap also detailed a pair of additional DS titles it’s developing. Amazing Adventures: The Forgotten Ruins and Mystery P.I.: Portrait of a Thief are two hidden object games that call on players to spot dozens of items in a given scene that will then serve as clues to piece together the story. Each game will feature 18 missions with 9 DS-exclusive locations. The two games will sell for $19.95 each and arrive this winter.

Hot on the heels of this week’s announcement that Nintendo’s Wii has sold 500,000 units down under, the latest batch of Australian data tracker GfK’s figures shows that seven out of the top 10 games in the overall Australian games chart are on Nintendo platforms. Taking out the number one spot was Super Smash Bros. Brawl, representing its second week at the top of the charts.
In second place was the Wii Play Wiimote bundle, knocking Mario Kart Wii down one place to the number three position for the week of July 14-20. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games on Wii climbed up one spot to number four, while Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? was right behind it in fifth. Guitar Hero: On Tour for the Nintendo DS continues to rock steadily, landing in the sixth spot, while Activision’s other entry into the charts, Kung Fu Panda on the PlayStation 2, moved up into number seven. Grand Theft Auto IV on the PlayStation 3 has returned to the chart this week, taking out the eighth place, while the 360 version was out of the overall top 10, but made a strong stand at number one in the platform-specific chart. After two weeks on sale, Buzz! Quiz TV on PlayStation 3 has finally made it into the charts, slipping into number nine. Rounding out the week at number 10 is More Brain Training from Dr Kawashima: How Old Is Your Brain?
